Hatters, Holes, & Horrors (jefferson)

Papa was in the kitchen making tea. Grace couldn’t wait! To her, no one made more delicious tea than Papa! Although being young and secluded, she hadn’t tasted very many teas. There were the ones Papa made; and, the ones the neighbors made. But there was no doubt in little Grace’s mind that Papa’s was the best! He was home, done with his work for the day; and, soon she’d be sipping that very scrumptious tea!
But Grace was filled with energy and not content to sit still and wait! Papa seemed to be taking forever! Papa had told her not to run inside the house but...He was in the kitchen so she didn’t think he’d know so long as she was quiet! After running a few laps around her table with the tea set and her beloved stuff animals, giggling softy, she noticed Papa’s hat. It was soooo pretty! All of a sudden she was overwhelmed with a great desire to feel it, play with it. Papa looked so cool when he flipped it on his head! She’d try something like that!
She hustled over to where it was hung up. It was a little above her head so she had to jump to grab it; but, soon she was rewarded when her fingers closed around the smooth silk. She tugged and yanked it down, falling backwards slightly as she did so. But the prize was hers! She grinned proudly, hugging the hat to her chest. Yes! It felt very nice indeed! Now..If she could just figure out how to flip it like Papa!
Grace threw it up in the air, trying to catch it with her head. She wasn’t sure what exactly she’d done wrong. But she knew before it would land that things hadn’t gone quite right. Not enough force? The angle was wrong?
Oh well! She didn’t believe in giving up! She’d try again! But..Maybe if she got a better feel for it... Flipping was like spinning wasn’t it? Only it was spun up rather than to the side! At least that’s what she thought! But spinning was easier! Maybe if she practiced spinning first it would go better!
She grinned and nodded her head in a determined fashion. Yes! She was doing that! She tossed the hat to the side, watching it twirl! But then..Something amazing happened! Her eyes widened in delight and wonder as the hat expanded and exuded purple smoke. She rushed closer to get a better look, jumping a bit just for the joy of the surprise and then...It was like the smoke grabbed her and pulled her inside. Just like magic!
Grace was giggling when she fell into a new place, landing on her feet like a cat. There were so many colorful doors! She clapped her hands excitedly as her head tossed and turned, trying to drink them all in at once!
She saw there was a looking glass and immediately moved towards it not because she was vain but because she wasn’t sure where the hat had gone. She couldn’t see it anywhere. Maybe the looking glass could show her! It had to be somewhere in the room didn’t it?
Grace still couldn’t find the hat but as a curious child..Well she had to touch the glass! Only..It didn’t feel like glass at all and she gasped, both eager and startled when her fingers slipped right through it as though the looking glass wasn’t glass at all but some sort of liquid. The hat entirely forgotten, she stepped outside the ‘glass’ to see grass and gigantic mushrooms! She clapped her hands again, giddy! What was this place?! It looked fun! She took off running determined to explore! Maybe she could even bring Papa back a few mushrooms to sell at market!

Jefferson appreciated being able to be home today. This was a rare moment in the mushroom market when he was able to be home. Normally he had to sell things every day or nearly every day in order to be able to survive but he had found some rare magic mushrooms, the sort used for potions rather than the sort which had an intrinsic magic power such as Wonderland mushrooms, which he had sold for quite a bit of money. He had squirreled away some as reserve and he would have to work tomorrow but for today the former hatter could take a break.
Being able to tell Grace he was able to stay home today, and seeing her face light up in joy, was worth the slight bit of nervous energy. Since he wanted to give Grace a bit of a treat, along with tea, he was also making some meat pies. He had trapped the rabbit himself and paid a little for the beef, the pie would last a few days so he didn't mind paying a little extra, but the food certainly required a bit more effort. He had started early so he had nearly completed the food... But then he felt the use of the magic hat and had to pause.
His heart rate was going fast when he felt the use of the hat and moved everything off heat before he ran to the hat. At the same time he was scolding himself for leaving it out. Stupid. He was stupid. Grace was too young to realize how dangerous the hat was and he just lost his wife because of it. But he had hung the hat fairly high and had had to use it to contact his witch contacts from before he was a mushroom seller. This teaches him to not be sure he put his hat away well enough. He was going to have to put the hat in a container right after he used it.
Jefferson saw the hat on the floor and spin it, scolding his hat for letting Grace use it, getting a returned comment from the hat about wanting to show Grace the worlds. It was easy to get from his hat which door Grace went through.... Of course it was Wonderland. Whenever something bad happened with his messenger work it was usually in Wonderland it happened. It just always seemed to be the annoying world. He took a breath and went through the looking glass, yelling in worry. "Grace!"

Curious Grace was scurrying around, poking and prodding everything with her fingers. The mushrooms here were certainly different. The size, shape, and even the color were like nothing she’d seen before. And she should know! She’d recently started helping Papa collect mushrooms! At first he didn’t want Grace to come with him in the woods. Papa worried about her too much! She loved exploring! And...
She knew she shouldn’t worry. So far, he’d always come back, always made it in time for tea. But...Mama wasn’t here anymore. They didn’t know what happened. But..Grace didn’t think she was ever coming back And sometimes...It seemed like Papa was afraid of something. And...Grace had to wonder why they lived out in the middle of nowhere. She loved her home dearly! There was nothing she enjoyed more than spending time with Papa in the forest. He was all she needed. But..she couldn’t help but feel he was hiding from something and maybe one day..It would catch up to him. One day...Maybe he wouldn’t come back. Silly, silly thoughts! Papa had never let her down! And she’d never let him down either! She really shouldn’t be so scared!
But she couldn’t help it. Grace never got to say goodbye to Mama. One day she was just gone. And she was terrified that one day Papa wouldn’t come back either; and, she’d be all alone. She couldn’t imagine a life without Papa! What would she do without his warm hugs and sweet kisses and his stories and the delicious tea and the way he picked her up and carried her and just..everything! Grace could be happy because Papa was here. And when he was gone by himself in the woods she just got so worried. Nothing could cheer her up, not even the pictures she made for Papa. So one day she’d followed him into the woods! He’d told her to stay with the neighbors; but, she sneaked away. She was good at that because she’d watched Papa! Almost no one was as quiet as him! It had taken a bit or practice but she was really good now! Most of the times even Papa couldn’t hear what she was up to!
He’d been upset that she hadn’t listened, worried about her. And Grace did feel bad for disobeying the rules. She didn’t want to make Papa unhappy. But when he was gone...Her stomach was in knots. She just wanted to see that he was okay! And he’d decided to let her stay and help! He’d taught her all about mushrooms. Grace was getting better at finding them all the time!
But none of these mushrooms looked familiar. They even smelled different. Grace had no idea if they were poisonous or not. But then..She wasn’t really sure where she was either. Everything...felt different somehow. Not like she minded. She really did love to explore! And besides..The hat had talked to her! She thought Papa’s hat was the coolest thing ever! It was special! How many hats could actually talk?! She knew none of hers did!
Thoughts drifting back to the hat, she hoped she hadn’t lost it. Papa would be upset and so would Grace. The hat was something like a friend. Grace didn’t get to meet that many people living out in the middle of nowhere; but, she liked talking to people and learning their stories. The hat had a lot of fun stories to share!
She hadn’t seen the hat in the room with all the doors. It was possible it had fallen through here or something. But it was more likely back in that room. She could look later! For now she would have fun here!
After wondering around for a little bit she saw a gigantic mushroom but it was different from the others. There was a red door on it! She giggled. “A mushroom with a door! Does someone live inside?” she babbled to herself.
She eagerly ran down the stairway, laughing in delight since it was much bigger on the inside. Magic must be involved! There were all sorts of interesting people down here with goggles and hats and masks and...All sorts of fun things!
Her eyes widened in glee when they rested on a huge caterpillar smoking on something that looked like a mini stage. What was this place?! It was amazing! And the circles he blew...So neat! Could she do that too?! On the tables...There were smoking bottle things. So..She probably could, couldn’t she?! She should ask the caterpillar!
Grace sprinted over to him, a wide smile on her face. “Hello there! My name’s Grace Hatter! It’s very nice to meet you Mr. Caterpillar sir! Do you think I can make those ring things too?! Is that what the bottles on the table are for?!”
